Off-grid and hybrid solar inverters: choosing the right operating mode

Match inverter power, battery voltage, MPPT inputs and backup operation without assuming every hybrid model can export to the grid.

Define how the system should operate

The words off-grid and hybrid describe operating functions, not a universal connection diagram. Write down whether the site needs an independent AC supply, solar battery charging, grid-connected self-consumption or dedicated outage support. Then check the exact inverter model against those requirements. A hybrid label does not by itself confirm permitted grid export, a particular transfer time or compatibility with an existing battery. Those details belong in the equipment documentation and installation design.

Selecting an off-grid hybrid inverter

The Batelithium off-grid hybrid solar inverter series lists 1.2kW, 3.6kW, 6kW and 12kW options. Choose continuous power from the loads that will run together, and check the starting demand of motors and compressors. Verify the battery voltage and charging limits of the chosen model rather than transferring settings from another member of the series. Off-grid operation should not be interpreted as permission to feed power into the public grid.

Selecting an on/off grid hybrid inverter

The on/off grid hybrid solar inverter series lists 6kW and 12kW options. The selected model needs to support the planned operating mode, metering arrangement and battery interface. A self-consumption design and a backup design may require different wiring even at the same inverter power. Confirm how essential loads are separated, what happens when the grid is unavailable and which protection and approval requirements apply at the installation location.

Check battery voltage and current

Battery voltage, charge current and discharge current must all fit the inverter. A 51.2V battery and an inverter described as 48V-class may be a candidate pairing, but that description alone is not confirmation. Check the full voltage window and the supported BMS protocol and firmware. Size the DC wiring and protection to the approved design. Battery energy determines potential running time; inverter power and battery current determine which loads can be supported at once.

Design the PV input around MPPT limits

Maximum power point tracking, or MPPT, is a solar input function. The array must stay within the selected inverter input voltage and current limits under the expected site conditions. Panel wattage alone is not enough to decide a string configuration. Where the model has multiple MPPT inputs, confirm how strings are assigned and how those inputs may be loaded. Use the exact model manual for the final string design rather than a generic series illustration.

Confirm the finished installation

Before ordering, collect the load list, inverter model, battery model, PV module data and intended connection diagram. Ask the installer to verify operating settings and test the intended modes during commissioning. The related product pages retain their full technical tables and model selectors for that comparison. References below explain the terminology using other manufacturers examples; they are not statements that those products or their settings are interchangeable with the Batelithium equipment.
